The CHS Manifesto

Kia ora koutou,

In the spirit of the time, I thought it would be good to make some commitments to you for this final term of the year.  While we won't be asking for your vote, we are asking for your support as we continue to build a culture of high expectations, high achievement, and pride in our school.

Our Commitment to Teaching and Learning

We pledge to teach to our full potential, every lesson, every day.

That means being prepared, starting classes on time, making the most of every learning opportunity, and ensuring that students receive high-quality teaching that supports both academic progress and personal growth. We know that every lesson matters, particularly as students work towards NCEA assessments and junior examinations.

We also commit to providing timely and meaningful feedback. Students deserve to know how they are progressing, what they are doing well, and what they need to do next to improve. Whether preparing for an internal assessment, external examination, or junior assessment, feedback remains one of the most powerful tools for success.

Our Commitment to Accountability

A successful school is built on shared responsibility.

We commit to holding students accountable for their learning, attendance, effort, and behaviour. High expectations are not about making school harder; they are about creating the conditions where every student can succeed. Students can expect teachers to challenge them, support them, and encourage them to meet deadlines, attend regularly, engage positively in class, and take ownership of their learning. In return, we will continue to provide the guidance and support necessary to help them achieve their goals.

Our Commitment to High Standards

We believe that standards matter. For example, uniform standards are not simply about appearance, they help create a sense of identity, equality, and pride in being part of Cambridge High School.

One visible sign of belonging and pride in our school is the way we wear our uniform. As we move into Term 4, we ask all students and whaanau to support our summer uniform expectations. These include wearing the correct school uniform items, appropriate footwear, approved socks (if not in sandals with backstraps!), and adhering to expectations regarding jewellery, hairstyles, makeup, and grooming, including facial hair.  Hoodies are not permitted, and there is ample stock of the school rain jacket for those odd days when El NiƱo is on holiday.   Having pride in your appearance does not just mean on when you step onto campus, but whenever you wear the uniform.  Please see our website for the full uniform policy and expectations.

Politicians often make promises for the future; our manifesto is about actions now.  Senior management met students at various gates today, and I'm pleased to report that most were well dressed, energetic, and ready for a great day of learning.  Let's work together to keep the focus on learning, with no campaign slogans, no election billboards, just a shared commitment to excellence.

Ngaa Mihi,

PL McAvoy
