School leadership update

Teenaa koutou ki te whaanau o te kura tuarua o Te Oko Horoi

Dear Parents and Caregivers,

I am writing to inform you that our Principal, Greg Thornton, has been appointed as the Principal at Rangitoto College and will start there at the beginning of Term 2.

I want to use this opportunity to thank Greg for his contribution to the school and our community. Since starting at Cambridge High School in 2019 he has made a significant difference, leading the school successfully through periods of growth, changes in curricula, and the pandemic.

Our review of the school strategic plan last year was a real highlight for the Board as it profiled a school where students are engaged and motivated by the range of opportunities available to them and the academic support and extension that they receive. The sense of belonging and connection that students have to their school is a testament to the work of Greg and his leadership team over many years.

The success that we see nationally and regionally in our academic, sports, arts and cultural programmes is remarkable and reflects the hard work that Greg and the staff at CHS put into the learning experience of our children.

Greg has been fully involved in the life of the school, competing in student-led events, contributing to our sport programme as a coach and referee and is a big supporter of our arts programmes. At the core of all of this is an academic experience that caters well for our community, meeting the needs of students with a range of subjects and high-quality learning programmes.

In our Board meetings, Greg talks with pride of the capability of students and the skill of the leadership team and staff to bring the best out of each student as they journey through CHS.

Greg led the establishment of our strategic focus and the establishment of our purpose – to empower every student to grow, realising their potential in an inspiring and supportive learning environment. As a Board we are fortunate to get a close look at how much work is being done at CHS to realise this purpose. It is a fantastic place for our students to attend and learn and we want to thank Greg for the impact he has had on establishing such a positive learning environment.

The Board is pleased to appoint Paul McAvoy as Acting Principal until the end of the year. This appointment gives stability and certainty to the school while the important process of a permanent appointment is carried out.

We are very fortunate to have an educator of Mr McAvoy’s calibre maintain the momentum of excellent work of the leadership team and our staff in providing an exceptional learning experience for our students.
