Shakespeare Nationals
Shakespeare is alive and well at Cambridge High School.

This group of students is proving that, having been chosen to head to the Shakespeare Globe Centre New Zealand drama national competition, which was  in Wellington on May 30.

Lachie Good, Harry Parsons, Grace Quinn-Foster, Cooper Hughes headed to Wellington as actors, while Olivia Rozbicki and Georgia Ball were there as crew.

Led by CHS teacher-in-charge of drama Larissa Peters, the group's path to Wellington started at the South Waikato regional performed three scenes, all student-directed.

One scene won and will be performed in Wellington. It was a five minute excerpt from Shakespeare's Hamlet.

Georgia directed a scene from Romeo and Juliet and Olivia Rozbicki a scene from Othello.

In the Hamlet scene, directed by Cooper Hughes, Hamlet is having an argument with his mother because she married his uncle.

In a unique twist, there were two Hamlets in the scene, one played by Lachie Good and one played by Harry Parsons. Hamlet's mother was played by Grace Quinn-Foster.

"It was actually a pretty physical scene to play, but in the end it was all good stuff," Harry said of the judges' reaction to the Hamlet performance.

Grace told the Cambridge Edition she was also happy with the outcome.

"It was our goal to go to Wellington."

A number of first-timers were in the team this year. Olivia and Georgia were both first-time directors at the festival.

Olivia described the scene she directed from Othello as "traditional with a modern twist", and both agreed that the process had been very rewarding. Georgia mentioned a major difference between acting and directing.

"When you are acting on stage there are things you can do to control your nervousness, but when you're directing you put all the work in beforehand, and once the actors are on stage you can't do anything about what happens.

"Everyone did so well," she said.
