Mountain Bike World Champ
Cambridge High School Year 13 student Sam Gaze is speeding ahead in his chosen sport of mountain biking.

Not only did he come out on top at his most recent competition in the U19 race of the Oceania Mountain Biking Championships but his latest wins have seen him jump 55 spots up the World Under 19 Cross Country Mountain Biking to claim the No.1 spot.

For the rankings jump came hot in the tire tracks of him going two-from-two at the Oceania Mountain Biking Championships in Glen Orchy over Easter weekend.

His first gold medal at the event came in a one hour long under 19 cross country race and he followed that up by also winning gold in the open men’s cross country eliminator.

Sam said the Oceania event “couldn’t have gone better”.“I do still get nervous when I’m competing but I think I’ve been racing for long enough to kind of know how to deal with them.”

He said being undefeated in under 19 races didn’t really add any extra pressure as such, but it does motivate him.  “I feed off it really.”

Sam said it was watching his dad compete in the sport that ultimately inspired him to take it up, and it’s clear he loves it.

“I’m not a big guy but it’s about fitness and you can still dominate your competition.

And I just love the feeling of flying through the trees when you are racing.”

Sam also headed overseas to compete in an event as part of the European season culminating in the World championships in South Africa in August.

Competing in Europe is quite a costly exercise and Sam under took fundraising in order to make the trip possible.
