Scholarship Success

“What’s really exciting is that I will be there over Christmas, so it will be snowing
and I’ll get to have a white Christmas,’ she said.

Cambridge High School (CHS) year 12 student Megan Hemming, 16, is looking forward to that experience after being awarded a Society for New Zealand–German Student Exchange (NZGSE) scholarship to Germany.

She is one of only five students nationwide to be awarded such a scholarship this year.

After going through the rigorous selection process, Megan will leave on the fully-funded 10-week stay in Germany in November, returning in February.

At the end of the first round of interviews, she made the shortlist of the top 15 applicants who were selected to fly to Wellington, where they were interviewed over a weekend.

As if that wasn’t enough, Megan was required to converse entirely in German throughout that interview process.

She went on to describe the rather nervous wait that followed.

“The suspense was killing me.  “I waited 13 days to hear whether or not I had received a scholarship.”

Megan said she was rapt to be given such an opportunity.

She said her selection of the exchange would not have happened without the tireless efforts of her German teacher at school, Lisa Robertson.

Megan said Frau Robertson “works so hard for her students’ and is always on hand to help them with their German studies when needed.

Robertson said it was CHS's ninth scholarship in eight years.

“I am so proud of Megan and all the effort she put in,” she said.

“She really impressed everyone from the first round of competition until the extremely challenging weekend in Wellington.”
