“One step at a time”.

That’s how former Cambridge High School 1st XV captain Mitch Jacobson summarises his rugby goals – which ultimately, he hopes, will see him become an All Black.

His latest step in the right direction has come in the form of him being selected for the New Zealand Secondary Schools team which headed to Sydney to play games against Australia, Australia A and a Fijian side.

After losing 22-20 to Fiji first up, a game Mitch missed do to an injury he picked up in training, the side went to win it's next two clashes 31-0 and 17-16.

In both of those games Mitch captained the side and the results saw the New Zealand team ultimately win the competition.

Mitch, who plays on the blind side, said it was the first time he has been selected for the side, although he as made the New Zealand Barbarian side before.

"Not only was it an honour to pull on the black jersey, but it was also a great privilege to captain the side."

Mitch said he felt the side improved as the tournament went on.

"I think in our first game against Fiji, the capitalised on our mistakes and they eventually got over the line.

"In the next two games our micro management, like our catching and passing and ball retention was better."

Given his role as captain, Mitch gave a humble response when asked how he felt it went.
He said he felt the leadership was a team effort because several of the other players were also captains of their respective school first XV sides.

Although he did concede and say, "I think I did my job," adding that he thoroughly enjoyed the experience.

Looking ahead from his latest selection, Jacobson said he will look to play for Hautapu next year, while eventually he love to be an All Black.

“Although to get there it’ll be one day at a time.”
