NZ National Secondary School's Netballer

Cambridge High School student Dawn de Bruin-Wakelin's passion for netball has resulted in her being given a national honour.

De Bruin-Wakelin has been selected for the New Zealand National Secondary School team, which hit the court at a trans-tasman competition that began in Rotorua yesterday.

As a first step to making the team, de Bruin-Wakelin attended a trial at St Peter's School in December.

From that trial, which attracted about 60 players from around New Zealand, de Bruin-Wakelin was chosen to attend a top 25 trial held last month.

She made the reserves of the national team last year, so making the step up to the playing seven this time was pleasing.

"Definitely making the reserves made me realise that I wanted to make the team even more, " de Bruin- Wakelin said.

Prior to the start of this week's tournament, the team had a training camp last Saturday.

De Bruin-Wakelin said teams from Australia, as well as the South Pacific will be there and she was looking forward to having a strong tournament.

"I play either centre or wing attack, " she said, adding that there's an ultimate goal she's working towards in the sport - making the Silver Ferns.

"That's definitely something I want to aspire to, " De Bruin-Wakelin said.
