BOT Annual Report 2011

It has again been another busy year at Cambridge High for staff, students and your Board of Trustees.

In June we had our visit from the Education Review Office. The inspection team were very impressed with how our school is progressing and our staff are to be congratulated for all the efforts they put in to ensure that our school and students’ achievements were seen in the best possible light.

Also this year the Ministry of Education decided that we were to have an Enrolment Scheme for Cambridge High for the 2012 year. In a way this is a backwards recognition of the good work that has been happening here at the school. We have been attracting students from outside our “natural” catchment area and the Ministry prefers that we grow from inside this area. The scheme is now in place and as a Board we have allocated and filled 30 places for Year 9 students from outside our zone.

I would also like to remind you that we have a student representative on the Board, elected annually by their peers. For the past year this was Alex King and for the next year it is Mikkah Drake. I have been impressed by both of these students as being willing to put themselves forward and for the maturity they have shown in Board discussions.

During the year we have seen the opening of the Technology Block by our local MP Louise Upston and the start of the new staffroom – scheduled to be completed for use in Term 1 next year.

These are two examples of how the Board is committed to funding improvements to our school. In November the Board developed our Strategic plan for 2012 and the years ahead. During this process we used data gathered from a Community Consultation evening held in the Library.

As a Board and a wider school community we cannot rest on the laurels of this year’s achievements, to stand still is to go backwards.

From the Board’s perspective it is pleasing to see the improvement in our NCEA results for another year. The one area that ERO encouraged us to do even more on is the attainment levels of our Maori students and this is an ongoing focus for us.

It was heartening to see our Mayor Alan Livingston in attendance at the Sports Dinner as well as the opening of the Technology Block. He continues to be a strong supporter of the schools and students in his district.

Thank you to all the staff for their continuing commitment and dedication to taking our young adults on their learning journey.
